Born in Charleston, Massachusetts, David L. Huntington, 1834-1899, studied medicine at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the army as an Assistant Surgeon in 1862. Huntington was Acting Medical Director Army of the Tennessee during Sherman's march to the sea in 1864. A career medical officer, Lt. Colonel Huntington at times served as acting Surgeon General. The Army Medical Library began in 1836 when Surgeon General of the Army Joseph Lovell first established a collection of medical literature for official use. John Shaw Billings, the first Librarian, greatly increased collections and initiated the Index Catalogue.
